Washington State students offered cheap TiVo in dorms
This is a pretty cool story out of Washington State. As part of the campus housing TV services, students will have the opportunity to buy a dual tuner 80hr Series 2 TiVo plus a full year of service for only $125. That's almost half the cost of the same box and service contract directly from tivo.com.
It's a bit of an extravagance for college, but back when I was in college I remember everyone would rush home for Simpsons and Seinfeld and having something like a TiVo would have been incredibly convenient for watching on my own free time (it'd also be a great way to procrastinate before a test).

I can see two reasons for this, one to allow students to record televised lectures (not likely) and two, to try and cut down on torrents on the school's net connection and attempts to get around security measures and blockages.
But still very cool! Lucky kids!

Oops, you're right Ken, I always get my Pac10 schools mixed up. Fixed!

It doesn't sound like they're integrating Tivos into coursework at WSU but I could see the benefit of the school's video library accessible via university Tivos. If a class is assigned to watch a film for a lecture, students could download the film instead of rushing to check out the library's DVD copies. Amazon and Tivo should develop a video distribution system for the education market.

A great deal -- especially in Pullman, where there's nothing to do but watch TV anyway!
