« TiVo finally comes to Canada | Main | HD DVD & Blu-Ray Disc Players from $219 Shipped at Amazon »
I've been meaning to post this for the past few weeks, but TiVo finally brought back the lifetime service option:
through January 2nd, 2008 -- current TiVo owners can upgrade their Series2 to a Series3 or HD with lifetime, or simply upgrade the service on their current S3 / HD -- equipment aside, the service will set you back $399
They also added a way to give a lifetime service TiVo as a gift. The gift+lifetime option is great because one thing that has prevented me from giving anyone in my family a TiVo is that it means another $12-16 month payment for them. It makes for a very expensive gift, but it's a much better way to just give someone TiVo and not have to worry about how much extra cost it will entail for them down the road. [thanks Jon!]

The title of this post is somewhat misleading, and as it's being picked up by google finance I thought I'd at least point that out. Lifetime service isn't 'back' in the fashion it existed before. Only existing customers can purchase lifetime, and only through January 2nd. Maybe it'll be extended indefinitely, maybe not... for now we can't say it's 'back' though, it's merely a promotional offer.

Ah! Too little, too late. TiVo wasn't keeping up with the times, much as I've adored mine. I built a DVR with dual-satellite, OTA, RadioShark and web-video inputs, along with all the media-watchin' fun, for <$500 - and no monthly fees, other than my satellite provider's feed.

It's still one lifetime service per TiVo for $399, right? So those of us with 3 would be $1200. That stinks.

I just talked to TiVo customer service. I have a TiVoHD with the prepaid 3 year service. I asked if I am allowed to upgrade my service to the lifetime subscription by paying $399 and his answer was NO. You must purchase a new TiVoHD box to get the lifetime subscription. What is the right answer ?

John C. Myers, it's only for existing Series 2 or Series 3 TiVos, not TiVoHD boxes as far as I can tell. For a TiVoHD, you would need to buy a new one.

Hey Gary - can you please post your specs? I'd be curious to see how you build a sub $500 DVR.. all my pricing (for decent case/HDD's and PVR250+) put it well above the $500 mark unless you already have some of the hardware. Thx.
