Dave Zatz is reporting another software update has been released for TiVo Series 3 boxes that finally enables official eSATA external storage.
For the past six months or so, there's been a hack to enable it, but it looks like it's finally going to be official.

Will this be available on the Tivo HD as well?

re: Joel, yes.
Course, I'd rather be able to decline the update, as it breaks the stupid third party hacks and perl scripts, etc that we need to resort to to simply get to browse folders on our computer from the tivo when picking files to transfer to the tivo.
Why that isn't part of the real client, I have no idea, but the tivodesktop software is essentially useless to anyone with more than a handful of files on their PC.
I like tivo, and yes, we've gotten a few updates in the past few weeks, but its an incredibly stagnant company when it comes to adding actual usability.

Stagnant company? not for the mainstream crowd. For power linux users then yes stagnant, but the 50 of you who are the power users show find a PVR distro that is for power users with a extra PC and video card. Tivo has to focus on the main stream of users and for them the word perl is a misspelled word of a jewel that goes on a necklace.
The features that they have released over the past few weeks is a gaint leap forward for (once again) main stream users.
I use rhapsody on my series 3 and look forward to the 9.2 update for tivotogo

Is there a difference between this 500GB drive and the standard 500GB MyBook from WD? I think I saw somewhere that they are the same SKU, but I can't find that reference now.
Thanks in advance.
