TiVo coming to Australia

The official TiVo.com.au site is now up, with a scheduled rollout next summer, just in time for the 2008 Olympics.

It seems it will be based on the TiVo HD platform and for some reason, the 30 second skip hack will not function on the Australian TiVos. Hopefully that's a feature that never goes away, as I've grown completely dependent on it in the last couple years. [thanks, Matthew!]

Interesting that it would be based on the TiVo HD platform. Do Australian cable providers support CableCARD? My searches are coming up empty.

Actually, the site has been up since at least June: http://www.tivolovers.com/2007/06/13/tivos-australian-website-is-up-and-more-news/ They've been slowly updating it with more info.

Peter,

No, Australia doesn't use CableCARD. Only the US does. But it will be *based* on the TiVo HD, not the same box we have in the US. Australia, and indeed most of the world, uses a different standard for digital TV than the US. While the US uses ATSC for broadcast HDTV, Australia, and many other countries, use DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial). The Australian units will be based on the TiVo HD platform, but will have DVB-T tuners, and other localization changes.

DVB is a family of standards. There are also DVB-S and DVB-C for satellite and cable, and other variants, like DVB-H for handheld (mobile) devices. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVB
