Just the other day I was saying a rumored TiVo Series 3 HD "lite" version seemed like a bad business idea for TiVo, but according to TV Squad it appears to be coming out next month. If it all turns out to be true, I imagine the full Series 3 TiVo sales will grind to a halt, but this may get more HD TiVos in the hands of people that wanted to ditch their Cable-provided DVR, but didn't want to foot the large bill for a Series 3.

I'd expect the price on the current Series3 to drop significantly. Tivo should be after market share, not margins. Apple did the opposite in the late 80's and early 90's and ceded the market to competitors who made products that weren't as good, but a lot cheaper.

It looks like they're offloading Series2 boxes right now, too. I've been offered the opportunity to transfer my lifetime membership to to a new 80 hour dual tuner because I've had the subscription for so long. The timing on this, along with the leaked Series3 info, would seem to suggest that they may be phasing the Series2 out altogether.
