Dave Zatz was the first to notice the new beta of TiVo Desktop 2.4 was released this weekend. It's PC only, and will work best with a Series 2 TiVo.
The big new feature added seems to be transcoding on the fly, reformating any mpeg1, mpeg2, or wmv video on your computer into a format that can be transfered and played back on your TiVo. They also upped the sizes of photographs that get displayed, up to 1280x720, calling it "HD photographs".
Looks like a good update, especially if you have a lot of multi-megapixel photos on a nice TV and also for those downloading a lot of shows or movies for playback on their TV.

Actually, Megazone over at TiVo Lovers was the first to notice. He wrote this up on Thursday, and we had an article up on TV Squad the same day. I'm sure Dave would have had something up sooner, but he was out of town.

I don't care what TiVo does with the desktop until they release it for LINUX!
It is terrible that TiVo, running on Linux, does not offer a desktop option for Linux.

I would have to agree with BC. Although I don't really care about a desktop interface for Linux. I would like to see a set of command line tools to allow us to transcode and push video to the TiVo. Something that's not Java would be really great.

Interesting...
I wonder if this has anything to do with the TiVo Decode utility - tivodecode.sourceforge.net Has anyone check to see if this still works with .tivo files downloaded using the beta?

For me, it doesn't matter what TiVo does now. Their ridiculous "ToGo" feature that requires hours to move a file to a pc and then still leaves it crippled was the nail in the coffin. I'm moving on to BeyondTV or MythTV both of which seem a much better value in terms of both functionality and price. TiVo had a great lead but has blown it...

Sounds cool! Too bad Tivo can't make shows better, like ABC's Lost.
