Video of the TiVo Series 3 box in action
Gear Live has a great short video of the Series 3 prototype in action at CES. It features TiVoPony showing off features (TiVoPony is the TiVo employee that hangs out on the TiVo Community board). The front LED display is incredibly sharp and looks handy. The way the multiple tuners works looks pretty smooth. Pony also covers how hard drive upgrades will be simple plug-n-play type upgrades. The new remote control is also covered, which features a way to tell top from bottom, even in the dark (they have ribs on the back, on one side).
I can't wait to buy one of these boxes and ditch my crappy cable-provider DVR, and if anyone at TiVo is reading this, I will name my next child after you if I can get a unit for early review when they're closer to being done.

I put one in the mail for you. No when is my little namesake due?

Matt...I'd love to see an early review of this unit. Let's hope Tivo plays along.

This is TiVo's first HD dual tuner box. They're relying on using two CableCards - one for each tuner. So, the total monthly bill to run this beast will be the TiVo Subscription fees + the rental fees to your cable provider to rent EACH CableCard (http://www.timewarnercable.com/corporate/products/digitalcable/cablecard.html)
So this is an incredibly expensive box to run.

Actually, they stated if your provider has Cablecard v2 you will only need ONE card for both tuners.
Otherwise, yeah, you'll need two cards for Cablecard v1.
With this HD-Tivo, I will opt for the lifetime subscription, so no more fees. It is expandable enough that I would feel comfortable doing this.

Any idea how to get content archived to a DVD?
I could see a use for recording more than 2 things at once.
Ideally, DVD writer and extra tuners would add on like the extra storage HDs... Seamless integration with conflict resolution and nice general purpose DVDs.
Will it still play nice with tivo series 2s, so I could send programs over my network to my old Tivo?
DVD and multiple tuners make me consider a MythTV box, but they are such a PITA compared to the zen of tivo.

You'll need two cards. There is not a multistream CableCard yet (what someone called v2).
When Multistream is released, you'll only need one card.

Will this new Tivo tune off air HDTV?

It would be nice to have Cable Card and Off Air and DVD recorder and Networkable boxes. No real need for dual tuner as a splitter before the box could do that. Right?

My Cable company, Cablevision, offers a 2nd cablecard for under $2.00 a month....

1) Will you be able to migrate the HardDrive from the Series 2 to the new box?
2) ..or can you upgrade the series 2 to a series 3
3) Will the series 3 have a DVDR, like the Humax?
Just some thoughts.
