Update on HME Beta

I'm not in the HME Beta because of the non-disclosure agreement, but someone who is in the program was nice enough to email me this about recent HME programs:

They rolled out some more stuff -- Yahoo Traffic, Yahoo Weather, and Yahoo Photos, plus a TiVo podcatcher (I think it's audio only, so far).

The Yahoo! application sound about right, considering their recent partnership. The podcast client sounds like a smart idea. People frequently explain podcasting like TiVo for audio, now TiVo is like TiVo! It's also another avenue for TiVo to build it's internet distribution features.

I suspect it doesn't, but if the podcast client supports video files (MPEG-2 only I would think, given the existing TiVoToComeback feature) then the TiVo would act as a collection point for all sorts of non-TV content. Would anyone in the HME program care to comment on whether the podcast client supports video?

Tivo isn't involved in distributing content at all. All they've enabled me to do is move the content I have recorded to another device. If NBC decides they want to sue, then I will decide not to watch anymore NBC programming. Simple as that.

TiVo is involved in distributing content. Moving content to other devices is just one feature of the platform. TiVo has had deals with CNet, Netflix, Yahoo, Nikon, and numerous, numerous, NUMEROUS advertisers to distribute other people's content. There will only be more in the future too.

I really have no interest in listening to radio on my TiVo/TV, so the podcast feature doesn't make much sense to me. That is of course they add video podcast capabilities, I'd love to watch dl.tv in my living room.

I would be interested in listening to podcasts through TiVo. I often work around the house listening to television. But the video podcast, of course, would be want I'm waiting for.

video podcasts would be outstanding. Catching Systm or Diggination or TWIT would really be a significant win for Tivo...

With out a doubt there would be some hurdles but it would be something that would blur the definition of what TV really is...

The only downside is the MPEG2 requirement. Patrick Norton already talks so much about how much bandwidth dl.tv is using right now; I can only imagine what the hit would be for on that. Maybe TiVo should look at building in BitTorrent capability? We can all dream, right?

Galleon has had these features plus more for a while so why is Tivo lagging behind? Tivo should have hired the Galleon developers after they won the HME contest and made Galleon an official Tivo application.

Galleon has a developer, Leon. It is pretty much a one man show.

And there is a big difference between an application you download and run locally for maybe a couple of TiVo's to hit, and a hosted service that has to handle potentially thousands of users. Galleon users (myself included) are generally going to be more technically adept and willing to deal with the bugs, crashes, etc, that can show up. If TiVo is going to roll something out with Yahoo, it needs to be more solid and usable for completely technophobes - keeping in line with TiVo's ease-of-use policies.

Galleon is a great application, and I encourage everyone to check it out, but it is a different type of animal entirely from a large-scale hosted system.

Y'know, as a TiVo guy (speaking purely personally, not for TiVo), it's kind of discouraging when someone in the beta program violates their NDA by leaking this info.

We had already throttled back the beta program because leaks like this are sadly predictable, but it sucks that we can't let more people get earlier looks and gather some feedback before we inflict it on a wider audience. It's just one more drag on the development process.

Gaah! I have the new services and they are painfully slow. It takes over 10 minutes for Yahoo! Weather to load on my series 2 (upgraded 160 hour). Much, much slower than the HME Weather through Galleon. Even loading the menu under "Music, Photos, etc." is painfully slow as the icons appear to be coming off the net rather than local disk.
