TiVo and Yahoo announce partnership, features

Firefoxscreensnapz001 A little birdie dropped me a note that looks legit and sounds trustworthy, but I can't back it up so I'm posting this as a rumor (that I have a strong hunch is real).

It looks like there's an impending deal between Yahoo and TiVo. The Yahoo TV section will add "record to TiVo" buttons like AOL added a couple years ago to their own listings. In addition, it sounds like some sort of HME app will be launched to let TiVo users get weather and traffic maps from Yahoo.

It sounds like it will be announced very soon, so we'll see in the next couple days if the rumor was true.

update: Looks like the Record to TiVo buttons are live at Yahoo, here's their page about it. Screenshot added to this post.

another update: here's the official article

The Yahoo button on tv.yahoo.com to "Record to Tivo" is present and functioning as of 11/6 at 6 pm.

Posted by: Tim at Nov 6, 2005 6:18:29 PM

The page to register for the web service (after logging in) crashes my Mac in Safari.

Posted by: Lex at Nov 6, 2005 7:14:06 PM

Actually just went through the sign up process on Yahoo - there are various exciting marketing / distribution placements that are part of the deal. Not sure why I would use the YahooTV interface because the existing TiVo online scheduling interface is pretty robust - though there is definitely plenty of additional functionality that users are interested in and that other software providers have already developed (and this doesnt appear to offer any additional functionality). But I suppose its a good start - at least in terms of big distribution partnerships. Yahoo actually makes a very logical strategic acquiror given its broad media ambitions (far more focused on original content, etc. than Google, and still has a robust ad network) - and TiVo remains the best positioned bridge between the TV, computer, Internet and home networking. I wonder if there are any strategic downsides to this deal in terms of driving users to YahooTV and away from TiVo's online scheduling platform...

Consider this a second report of Safari crashing. And I tried twice.

Posted by: Mike at Nov 6, 2005 7:33:56 PM

TIVO message board locked on Yahoo Finance. No new messages allowed?

Posted by: david at Nov 6, 2005 7:40:19 PM

so what? you can already schedule a recording online from tivo.com. we're supposed to get excited that tivo let yahoo use their button?

Posted by: ed at Nov 6, 2005 8:00:30 PM

There are a number of TiVo related Yahoo groups. Apparently one of the stock discussion boards was getting flooded with *hundreds* of posts from one nutcase, and it was shut down - not sure if it will be back.

There are a lot of TiVo related discussion forums: http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=tivolovers

Posted by: MegaZone at Nov 6, 2005 8:21:31 PM

Yep, Safari crashes here too, FireFox works. Yet AGAIN Yahoo! seems not to care at all about Macs.

Posted by: schalliol at Nov 6, 2005 8:46:51 PM

*Sigh* and as usual the direct TV customer gets screwed with their pants on feature wise, never mind that we pour a huge amount of revenue into their war coffers both via direct hardware purchases and packages. I can't wait to fire them and get decent integrated HD via MCE from, well anybody else. Feckless cheap ass thugs.

Posted by: Griffon at Nov 6, 2005 8:47:34 PM

Cant DV subs use a standalone too?

Posted by: Tyson at Nov 6, 2005 9:11:11 PM

FULL TEXT of the NYT thing is at TiVoToday.com

Posted by: sbl at Nov 6, 2005 11:58:13 PM

crashes safari here too. nice.

Posted by: hudson at Nov 7, 2005 4:24:33 AM

NICE!!!
I love this so much.
I hope Yahoo! offers more features like Yahoo! Mail using TiVo.
Did Google miss the boat or are they gonna offer something similar for the TiVo?

Posted by: Johnny at Nov 7, 2005 6:17:37 AM

The page which is crashing Safari is hosted on tivo.com, not Yahoo. Check the URL in your status bar. Sounds like a TiVo problem, not a Yahoo problem.

Posted by: Fru at Nov 7, 2005 8:47:36 AM

Odd... I registered but my Series 2 TiVo is not showing up on the list when I click "Update DVR list". It knows I'm logged in and connected but it's not letting me access my recorder.

Clicking the "Record to my TiVo box" link sends me to a Document Not Found page as well.

So... very little to do so far, and the little it does now, it doesn't. Great partnership!

Posted by: noah at Nov 7, 2005 3:18:21 PM

Is anyone else getting this error:

"Sorry, Invalid Signature Specified. Please try again later."

I get it when I go from My Yahoo to the promo page and click "Register Now".

I've been trying it all day, getting the same result each time.

Posted by: adm at Nov 7, 2005 3:30:50 PM

oh, never mind. looks like the problem was that i was logged into Yahoo and accessing it through the tv grid on the bottom of My Yahoo, rather than tv.yahoo.com. I guess the two pages have their wires crossed or something. Logging out and going straight to tv.yahoo.com fixed it.

Posted by: adm at Nov 7, 2005 3:34:55 PM

"Sorry, Invalid Signature Specified. Please try again later."

I'm getting that same error message while using Yahoo TV & haven't been able to fix it. Anyone found any way to get around this?

Posted by: Rich at Nov 7, 2005 6:37:50 PM

That HME-like app better support Macs!

Posted by: schalliol at Nov 7, 2005 7:10:56 PM

Funny. I wonder how many people they employ to work on their website and yet they can't code a page that is web standards compliant. I got into the page in Firefox eventually, but the scheduling doesn't support Canadian postal codes. So I'm a minority within a minority -- the mac using Canadian. Thanks Yahoo.

Posted by: warrenpeace™ at Nov 7, 2005 9:14:03 PM

(Sigh), and here I sit with my Series-1 TiVo, missing out on all the fun. DAMN YOU, SERIES 1, for being so dependable!!!

Posted by: jerome nicholson at Nov 7, 2005 11:43:50 PM

Firefox on mac doesn't work for me- it keeps reloading the same page when I try to go to a more info page.

Posted by: seth at Nov 8, 2005 4:21:53 AM

Firefox 1.5 on a Mac OSX 10.3 worked fine for me. One small initial error, but then I submitted the record request again and it went right through.

Posted by: thecroz at Nov 8, 2005 2:11:01 PM

It looks like they have fixed the signature problem when you start from the my page. It works ok for me now.

Posted by: dc at Nov 8, 2005 3:38:43 PM

i get a page expired error on an xp machine when i try to schedule from the yahoo tivo links...

Posted by: sean at Nov 12, 2005 6:44:19 AM

I LOVE being able to schedule a recording from Yahoo! Their way of displaying shows (multiple channels by time)is much better than Tivo's schedule listings (by a single channel).

Posted by: Gilbert at Nov 17, 2005 10:05:39 PM

I've had problems off and on, but the site seems to be more stable now.
