TiVo is coming to your iPod, PSP
Big news from TiVo this Monday: The Associated Press is reporting that TiVo will release TiVoToGo recordings in formats specifically for the Playstation Portable and the video iPod. There's not a lot of details aside from it being a beta test at first, but great to see TiVo embracing other formats and players.
This is kind of surprising to hear, given that the windows media DRM in other portable media players keeps the files locked up. It would seem either TiVo and Apple agreed to work together, or files destined for these new players will be unprotected.
The TiVo Community has more on this. [thanks Pete]

i'll take bets on the odds that the mac community still won't have TTG

I saw this via CNet and was just coming over to let you know: http://news.com.com/TiVo+to+transfer+shows+to+iPods%2C+Sony+PSP/2100-1041_3-5963902.html
CNet got it via the HYT, which is reporting it will be released in early 2006.

This feature is great + good way to prevent piracy.

Actually one barrier to having mac support was the directshow filter used on the .tivo files... Maybe now they will support a quicktime equivalent...

I'm reading about it in the WSJ.com today. TiVo will insert an invisible watermark (that will probably have the ID number of the TiVo subscriber) to help them and network execs track down pirates who distribute on the Internet. Also, TiVo did this without Apple's participation.

You failed to mention that in the article, TiVo stated the software to transfer from your TiVo to your iPod would cost somewhere between $15-$30. Sounds like another HME in waiting, charge as many people as they can, then give it away. TiVo must have been at Woodstock.......

Right, more info: will transfer from Tivo2Go via USB, which is kind of frustrating since it doesn't work with Apple's Mac! Come on TiVo, need a solution for Apple users...

From TiVo's marketing contributor to the TiVo Community:
"Regarding the Macintosh...
Yes, we intend to support it, but not in the February release. Macintosh support for the new features announced today is planned for mid-2006.

You know what? Even though I'm a loyal TiVo customer and I criticize them for failing to keep up with modern tech (regarding high definition), I am not going to criticize them on charging a fee for this option. The fee isn't about TiVo making money for this new feature; it is most likely to cover the cost of the MPEG4 codec licenses that it will have to license in order to enable this feature. TiVo Series 1 & 2 boxes use MPEG2, and thus the costs associated with the MPEG2 licensing is bore with each machine purchased. MPEG4 does not ship with each machine. Thus instead of making all potential customers buying new machines have to pay for a license on an option they might not use, TiVo is having those interested in the new feature pay for it directly.
This is no different than other tech companies who do the same. Look at Microsoft. When they shipped Windows XP, they did not include licenses to cover MP3 conversion in Windows Media Player. Microsoft wanted to promote WMA over MP3 and they also did not want to pay a license per Windows software unit shipped. So they transferred the licensing fee on any Windows user who wanted the MP3 option to buy it separately. They also did the same thing with the Xbox regarding MPEG2 decoding for DVD playback. They made Xbox owners buy the separate "DVD remote control" package which really was a means of those interested to buy the MPEG2 license on their own. The optional package cost $20, most of which paid for the MPEG2 license because the packaged remote control really was a rebranded cheap GE remote.
So the moral of the story is criticize TiVo where it should be criticized (ie. snail pace movement to HD), not on uneducated bickering over MPEG4 licensing costs.
And one last thing. TiVo could have opted to throw in Xvid transcoding since its open source, but that would not have benefited iPod or PSP owners officially.

I'm using Scientific's DVR box via Cablevision. Is there a similar type "TiVo-to-go" solution for these DVR's? I'd love to get it on my PSP via my Mac. Thanks for any leads.
