Get TiVo for only 16.95* including the box!
Interesting, it looks like TiVo's moving to the cellphone business model completely, offering a free TiVo box for a slightly higher monthly charge. No word on if the monthly changes after the 1 year contract is up, but great to see TiVo trying new stuff. [thanks Davis]

Man! Would it kill them to ship to Canada? For chrissakes we're not on the moon!

From the fine print: "Upgrades to product lifetime service not permitted". It doesn't say anything about after the first 12 months though.
So you pay about $200 for a 40 hour TiVo plus 1 year of service.
If you buy it separately you pay $50 (after rebate) for the TiVo plus about $150 for the first year of service.
It comes out to almost exactly the same price (a few dollars cheaper), you pay monthly instead of all at once and you don't have to deal with rebates (as far as I can tell). There seems to be no downside if it's your first TiVo you are buying.
The only risk I see is if they try to charge you the $16.95/mo after you initial 1 year commitment. It seems that even if they did you should be able to cancel yuour service and immediately re-activate. Still I'd get clarification on that before I signed up.

yeah, you save about $2 over getting a $50 box and paying $12.95/mo. and what about multiple boxes? if you get two tivos w/ that deal, do you pay $16.95/mo. each for them?

Any chance of getting the box and paying the lifetime subscription, or has that ended?

You can still get the box with lifetime, this is just an alternative.

delbert_grady (great name, btw) - from the fine print: TIVO SERIES2 DVRS AND TIVO SERVICE SUBSCRIPTIONS PURCHASED AS PART OF THIS OFFER ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR INCLUSION IN THE MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT AND DO NOT QUALIFY ANY EXISTING OR ADDITIONAL UNITS FOR MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT.
That last part is particularly unfortunate, as it removes one of the big incentives for purchasing a second tivo for another room.

This is merely a tool to blow out the existing series 2 stock prior to the Hi-Def capable models in 2006.

I wanted to call them up and see if you just need a US address to ship to or a full US credit card address, but their help line number doesn't even work in canada! ARGH!
Hopefully this is just because they are only recently available in .ca though...

I just spoke with a Cust Rep at tivo and they confirmed after a year your monthly payment goes down to the 12.95. I have been using a Comcast DVR for the last 3 months and I feel such a relief now that I know a tivo is on its way

I'm curious to see how successful this sale will be, or will people be waiting for HD next year?

Circuit City has been running a special...basically a free box (but you must sign a two year contract).
