Apple PVR coming to next MacWorld?

Think Secret is reporting a leak that Apple may unveil a PVR in January at the next MacWorld. They say "Kaleidoscope" could be a combination of a mac mini, Front Row, and a PVR, and be Apple's first move into the living room. Given the release of the video iPod and Front Row on the new iMac, it doesn't seem like much of a leap for Apple to do a project like this. Think Secret also has a pretty good track record on getting scoops before every MacWorld, so I'd say this rumor is quite plausable. [thanks Davis]

Interesting news. I'm the project manager for Microsoft's Media Center PVR features. I always thought that Apple avoided PVR consciously. Too many parts of the experience would not be under their direct control.

I'm excited to see what they come up with. It'd be good to rev up some fun competition.

I will say the amount of work required is pretty massive, and I'd be surprised if it didn't feel more 'v1' than most of Apple's debuts.

Think Secret's reputation for accuracy comes from stories they put out less than 48 hours before an event, and only by comparison to the monkeys with ouija boards who staff most other Mac rumor sites. This story has the distinct smell of rubbish to me.

...and I think it's bogus too, but didn't want to come off as non-objective :)

OK - so why wouldn't Apple jump in here? The stakes are too high for them not to want to own a sizable piece of what remains currently a *VERY* fractured environment.

Rumor or not it just makes great business sense if Apple wants to sell more Mac's and video iPod's. The only percieved nagative is how the studios will react, but some one will do this and if I were the studios I'd rather have Apple do it. Reason - so that customers use iTunes as the user interface. By so doing the studios have a far better chance of getting sales on their back catalogs through the iTunes Video store than having a bunch of PVR companies coming out with products that don't provide any value to the studios.

especially since Tivo has been doing crapola for mac users forever.

I would love to get rid of Windows Media Center from my living room. After running it for 3 or 4 months...I need a better solution. MCE is a bloated slow convoluted glob of bits!
I'm slowly replacing all my WinTels with MacTels...
