Give your TiVo a Facelift

This is an odd development but may be useful for some folks. The guys behind Weaknees figured out that you can interchange the front faceplates of TiVo boxes between almost any series 2 TiVo or DirecTiVo.

One of the downsides of having a standalone TiVo is that if you lose the remote or the batteries die, it's essentially a useless box. But the DirecTV versions always included basic TiVo nav buttons on the face. I've had a couple DirecTiVos for the past few years and from time to time if I'm sitting in front of my home theater setup fiddling with buttons, I tend to use the faceplate controls instead of a remote, but it's not very often that I do it.

Still, for die-hard TiVo fans a new button-filled faceplate might serve as a good backup in case your standalone TiVo remote ever dies.

You can get an el-cheapo multi-fcn remote at Wal-Mart that can do most TiVo codes.

Best Buy usually has a Demo or returned DTivo for $29-39. I have picked up two in the last several months just to have for spare parts or if one of my three active DTivos gets fried. Why get a face plate for $29 when you can get the whole box?

Logitech Harmony has been the only remote that i have ever used for my TIVO. I couldn't imagine life without it.

I can't imagine using a TiVo without a Home Theater Master MX-500, personally.

Front panel controls are also useful if you need to control two or more Tivos from the same remote. You need to navigate to the system info screens to make the Tivo sync to a particular remote code. Sometimes it's easier to use the panel controls rather than the remote to make this happen.
