Long Tail of video? Meet Google: Google just launched their Video Upload Program.
It's crazy to think that searches on Google Video will now include random people's own video and hopefully you won't be limited by what you can search for and they highlight the good stuff. I suspect the main Google Video site will look less like google.com and more like Google News someday, as they showcase video of all types.
I just tried it out, uploading a few short movies I took on my digital camera. Here's what the uploader looks like when finished:
And here's what my uploaded videos currently look like, while sitting in limbo:
The coolest part is that you can even charge for downloads/viewings of video. I can't wait to see what comes out of this, perhaps Google was trying to one-up companies in the bittorrent and IP-based TV space before they could even get going.

I'm waiting for my videos to be "verified"
Thanks for the info...

The downside, is, of course, the draconian terms of use. Read carefully -- if you upload a video that's too popular, they'll send *you* the bandwidth bill.

Doesn't Google Video only search the captions from local TV programs? It doesn't actually find movie files at all, just text excerpts. The product seems inappropriately named.
Google Video results for "sin city" (text):
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=sin+city
Yahoo! Video results for "sin city" (videos):
http://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?p=sin+city
I guess Google is going to completely change the current Google Video....?

Ourmedia + archive.org is like the same thing. You can choose what kind of license you want to give your content. While not providing a way for people to make money with their videos, it does provide a great way for any average joe to store anything anytime.

I read the terms of service, and I think Jacob is maybe reading them wrong.
It doesn't say they'll bill YOU for the bandwidth, it says they reserve the right to charge a fee for a video that you upload. Reads more like the cafepress of video to me.

Google's usually pretty good about terms of service problems. They've rewritten the one on Google Ads a few times in response to concerns from others.

hmm very interesting.. i mean i would do small clip uploads to send to my friends etc; but definitly would not want it in public domain though :(; if they did something where they have a way of hiding a video which can only be viewed via direct link or a temporary link that you can create to send to friends :)

Sam - From what Larry page has said, they're working on software to search video clips. So yes, Google Video is about to change. That's why they want home videos, to test it.

cypherkin - checkout putfile.com

Sam - "Google searches captions" Yes, that's my understanding too. If you're interested, I blogged a comparison of video search engines in February with two example comparative searches.

Matt,
Check out yousendit.com for temporary file exchanges, works very well, and it's faster than putfile.
In addition, you have to option to DOWNLOAD instead of streaming the video. PS, I hate putfile.

Matt,
Check out mypersonalvideos.com. You can password protect your videos and video gallery. You get your own domain name for your personal video gallery and can e-mail videos to family and friends.
It's an average joe type set up too. Real easy to use.
For those who want the world to see your videos, you can do that as well.

Gooogle changed the terms of service to more accurately reflect potential charges for popular videos:
https://upload.video.google.com/video_faq.html#upload9
The viewer will potentially be charged for free videos or Google will take a larger cut for pay-per-view videos.

Yes, I just uploaded a video onto upload.video.google.com
But the thing is that Google wouldn't verify your video is it wasn't in MPEG2 , MPEG4 or format they say in the FAQ. Which is rather annoying. So now, I have to go round looking for a converter.

Another good place to share video is JussPress.com. My friend and I are working on it.

how long does it take for google to verify your videos? i've been waiting 2 days now.
Posted by: baz at Aug 7, 2005 2:16:17 AM
Hey dude!
Yeah, I tried searching "driving" and like... 200 videos came up, and I tried the oregon one, and nothing came up, but only 2 videos came up for "jellyfish", so I'm guessing that the one that was shot at Epcot was yours. Cool stuff! If you want to see the one that I uploaded, search "Ebay" and mine is the video with the 3 green windows. It's a music video that I made. Ok, well... happy video uploading! (???)

It took several days for Google to verify my video. It recently was approved and I got the signal to search for it. However, I can't seem to find it. I can't imagine that it would be a problem. I have entering the exact title of the video.
Posted by: John at Aug 12, 2005 5:58:10 PM
I think the whole verification thing is a problem.

I've put some vids on google video, but for some reason, the sound keeps getting erased when uploaded, so none of my videos have sound.
Posted by: carl at Aug 20, 2005 12:56:31 PM
Forgot to say, it took about 4days to verify the first vids and about 2 days for the scond lot.

I've managed to save up roughly $78614 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?

As a comment to lalala's message about sound, it is the same for me! When I upload, the sound is erased!
Do anyone have an idea?

"The coolest part is that you can even charge for downloads/viewings of video."
This part really catches my eye... but since this article was posted I see that there is more of a shift to profit sharing with a majority of the video services, not specifically being able to charge for content but atleast giving the submitter the choice to share in the revenue that their content creates.

Well all,
I am the old school of art. I just discovered that Google is into this video steaming as the article states above (with no date?? Why don't they make it a law to date an article like we used to see in the newspapers date at top of the page?) then to find that is is not new after all? as I write today on April 19 2007.
So why do I get the idea that google was before You-Tube? Aren't they all the same?
And what's really in a name? The color of the money? Or the color of your TV screen.
Ground control to Major Tom . . .
