Rumors about TiVo's "coming soon" 802.11g support have recently come true. The Houston Chronicle has a short article about two 802.11g adapters for a TiVo running software version 7.1 (Netgear's WG111 and D-Link's DWL-G120).
The support page for TiVo Wireless Adapters confirms that these two wireless adapters will work with your TiVo in wireless G mode, as long as it has the most recent 7.1 OS release. This should make show transfers go a lot faster. [thanks Mike!]

DID you read his last post/
One more time: Kelly now reports that, even though the 802.11g adapters work, they don't deliver 802.11g speeds -- they "are not significantly faster than b for Tivo transfers."
If that's the case, then what's the point?

My TiVo updated to the "a" version last night. I had a thought this announcement was coming.

Interesting artcile - I assume that in the future TiVo will get better speeds.
The point of 802.11g support would be to not slow down your existing 802.11g wireless network to 802.11b speeds. If you have even one device that is 802.11b on your wireless network, then all of your 802.11g devices will all step down to the b speeds.
Also, with the arrival of 802.11g on TiVo, there may be better wireless security available - WPA for TiVo would be a blessing so I don't have to lower my wireless network security to WEP.
Can anyone confirm or deny that WPA (AES Pre-Shared key) works?

I thought the USB ports in the series 2 Tivos were USB 1 (or 1.1). That would limit the speed to 10mbps even if it were a G adapter.
Posted by: Greg at Feb 20, 2005 3:18:23 PM
Only the early Series 2 boxes had USB 1.1 hardware; all the later boxes had USB 2 hardware. However, the existing software did not support USB 2, unless recent software upgrades also takes care of that problem.

I can confirm that the Netgear WG111v2 works with my 7.1a Series2 Tivo. Just bought one today for 9.99 (AR), replaced my old Netgear MA101 802.11b and it works like a charm. Now to somehow upgrade USB 1.1 to USB 2.0...

I had found out a month ago on my friend's 7.1a Series2 DVR that my NetGear WG111 USB adaptor would work. When I had talked to a TiVo Tech Rep, he had said all but the rev 1 Series 2 DVRs have USB2.
Once I got my 7.1a updates on my two DVRs, I did a TiVo to TiVo copy and the speeds were faster but still not quite fast enough to copy faster than I was watching. Instead of a hour show taking over 2 hours to copy, it would take 1 hour 15 minutes or so.
As for WPA, it seems the NetGear WG111 does not itself support WPA, however the WG111T and WG111U do support WPA. I didn't get either one of them so I don't know if the TiVo supports even using them nor whether 7.1a supports using WPA. My *educated* guess would be that the TiVo 7.1a can use the WG111T and WG111U but does not support using WPA.

Having one 802.11b device on an 802.11g network *DOES NOT* slow down all devices to 802.11b speeds. It does slow down the network some since headers have to be transmitted in 802.11b mode, but the data between 802.11g devices is still in 802.11g mode. The mode 11b devices you add the slower it goes, and the 11g devices will be slower when the 11b is transmitting a lot of data.
Also, all USB ports on TiVos run in USB 1.1 mode (Even if they have USB 2.0 HW). This means the max rate is 12mb/sec, so you will never get 802.11g speeds until they update the drivers to support USB 2.0.

According to a TiVo employee on the TiVo forums, even though they've added support for 802.11g adapters they have no plans to support WPA. Brilliant.

I just bought and installed the new WG111 after being notified that the latest upgrade had been applied to y tivo series 2 box. There was some weirdness with the configuration at first, the Tivo could find the wireless network (WEP 128) but not the gateway. I figured that this was due to some WEP problem.
After trying for about an hour, I removed the device, bounced the tivo and tried again. This time it worked.
I think the biggest advantage in using the G adapter is not having to slow down my G network to B speeds (as I had to do before). Whether its actually faster for the tivo is less important to me than the speed of my home network.

I just purchased a Netgear WG111 v2. I have a series 2 TIVO unit.It doesn't seem to recognize the adapter. Have the latest 7.whatever software. Any ideas?
Posted by: John at Apr 26, 2005 4:08:57 PM
I have the wg111 v2 also, and am downloading the latest software. I requested the software from tivo's website, but I guess the request has not processed on their end yet.
My wg111 v2 isn't recognized as an adapter either. I'm hoping the updated software will recognize it.
By the way, is it confirmed that only WEP is supported, and not WPA? I bought tivo because I thought it would be better than cable vision's dvr. I like tivo, but it seems like the cable vision dvr is "easier". Updates through the coax connection and it has 2 tuners that can record simultaneously.
I guess tivo is the better choice because it is more user friendly.
Also, those IR things that change the cable box's channel are cheesy! But I guess that's the only way to do it? (unless the cable box has an interface they expose for changing the channel).
The cable box has a usb port (not sure why) and the tivo has 2 usb ports. 1 for the broadband connection. Could I use the other one to connect to the cable box and change the channel that way? Not sure if there is a hack for that.
lmk.
Thanks

I got shafted on that WA111 v2 thing too. Not by Tivo, but by NewEgg. They sent me a v2 when the product specs and picture showed a v1. Bastards had the audacity to charge restocking, despite their stupidity.
Everything I've seen suggests that g support and speed compared favorably to the speed to cold tar oozing down a hill. Tivo doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry with wireless anyway, so I've not been too eager to bother with the g, since it's not even maxing out the b wireless.

I have the WG111 too and I can confirm that it is NO WHERE NEAR as fast as my old Belkin FSD6050. Sucks because transferring a 1 hour show can take anywhere from 1.5 hours to 6 or 7 hours.
Also Settings recognizes the signal as "44%/Marginal" at best, where my Belkin was always in the 80s.

I'm guessing still a bit too early to try this out...I think we're still in the trial phase. Todd Lokken

sigh. same here. i bought the netgear wg111 from newegg to find out that it's not compatible with tivo. worse, they don't accept returns for these anymore (says that you have to go to manufacturer which won't accept the return anyway). having to know the models and serials and the lack of wpa support and the very few 802.11g compatible adapters can just drive you nuts. i think i'm switching to cablevision's dvr -- at least i know what to expect from what they're offering.

I have the correct WG111 -- the one that comes with a Tivo stamp on the box. It'd work for a few minutes and then die. After seeing some web posts about heat problems, I thought of making my own heat sink, but then chose to place the WG111 behind the Tivo fan. Now it stays up through a full transfer. Now if only I can get 128-bit WEP to work...

I bought a trendnet wireless g adapter thinking that if TIVO started supporting wireless g any adapter should work!!.
Now the TIVO box is not recognizing it.
Is there any way this could be used to connect to network??

I have a WG111 that's supposed to work (S/N starts with 130), but the LED does not light up when I plug it into my Tivo (though it does when I plug it into my laptop). As a result, I only have the "Edit phone settings" option, rather than the "Edit phone and network settings" option, suggesting that the Tivo can't even find the WG111. Has anyone else dealt with this problem? I have the latest Tivo software installed and have rebooted my Tivo with the adaptor plugged in. Nothing has worked. Please help!

I've been dealing with the same problem for two days now. Very frustrating.

I had the same issue - only phone settings, not network. I hooked up to the phoneline to download the next 2 wks worth of data, and my tivo got a software update. It took hours - I let it just run overnight. Anyway, came down the next morning and voila - I had network settings! The WG111v2 didn't work, but I found a compatible b adaptor on justdeals.com for under $20 with free shipping, so I can't go wrong with that, until they get their G act together!

Just got me a new wireless G card from Belkin. OOPS Tivo doesn't support it, I have to go find a shitty B card I guess!!! And I always liked Tivo because of their GOOD software, what a joke.
