JavaHMO hits 2.0
JavaHMO, an open source replacement for the TiVo Desktop, has released version 2.0 of their software. It cleverly exploits the developer API's ability to publish pictures to display all sorts of useful information such as movie times and weather. New in 2.0 are email, RSS feeds, stock prices, web page viewer, USENET and more.
Check out the screenshots to get a better idea of how it works on the TiVo end. It also has support for the TiVo Beacon API which means that you can run it alongside other HMO servers like TiVo Desktop.

Sweet. I'm downloading now to test out on my PC (my mac is running the official TiVo release).

Just for the record, Matt, this version can peacefully coexist on a machine already running the "official" TiVo desktop software. The developer hasn't released the Mac installer yet, but when he does it will work just fine alongside the official release if you don't want to get rid of that, and it adds quite a bit of new features.

I'm using this now. Everything works fine except the web page browsing. This is pretty cool

With the recent news that we may see HMO features on DirecTivos very soon, I'm giving this a test drive right now. At least the PC side of things...

Two noteworthy things about the JavaHMO vs. the Tivo Desktop Client:
1. The JavaHMO doesn't suffer from the same problems the official Tivo client does regarding large numbers of folders/files (this tends to crash the Tivo version)
2. The JavaHMO supports iTunes playlists.

Rob,
You've forgotten one other rather cool feature of JavaHMO, the ability to cull images from the internet and feed them to your TiVo. This is nice for weather images other than those provided stock in the weather section of JavaHMO and for webcams.

One problem with JavaHMO is that it has ridiculous memory usage. On my systsem (Windows 2003) JavaHMO 2 uses about 70Mb of physical memory and another 80Mb of virtual (paged) memory.
Love the features but hate that it uses Java.
