WM Recorder - a PVR for streaming media
WM Recorder sounds like a pretty cool new product that lets you capture streaming windows media to a file. Seems like they'll be on shaky legal ground as many pay-only audio and video services use the windows media format solely to get around people doing this. More details on the software in their press release today.

ASFRecorder has provided this functionality for years, but not as prettily or robustly. [google ASFRecorder for info/download]

A freeware download manager called NetTransport 2 that streams and records MMS (WMV, WMA), QuickTime and RTSP (RealVideo, RealAudio) streams to file on your hard drive. It's been out for ages. :)

Also, the mplayer video open source do-everything can record real/wm
For example:
mplayer -dumpstream "http://wm.npr.na-central.speedera.net/wm.npr.na-central/fa/20041116_fa_01.wma" -dumpfile spongebobnpr.wma
Will save the Fresh Air interview with the voice of Spongebob Squarepants.
Also, VLC, the other open source video do-everything can also record, but I'm not sure how at the moment.
The advantage that WMRecord has over both of these is its speed - it opens extra connection to the stream so it takes a much shorter time to record. It also has resume and the nice GUI that makes it easy to find the URLs. If you poke around, you can find an older version of it that works just fine and is free.

Since you mention it, NetTransport 2 can open unlimited simultaneous connections to the stream. :)

There are many more programs than mentioned here. BTW ASFRecorder is not the program that should be used. There are many more free streaming media recorders.
If you are confused when choosing a streaming media recorder you may contact their support stuff. They advise software that fits your needs and they suggest free decent software that can be used instead of commercial stream recorders.
