As I sit here waiting for my HDTV DirecTiVo review unit, I looked longingly at a couple regular folks who recently got HDTV and are raving about the quality: HDTV baby and The Glory of HDTV.
But…perhaps I’m just more sensitive to picture quality because I spend so much time in front of a monitor. HDTV feels like I’m watching DVDs all the time. If HDTV were more expensive, I would pick and choose who to recommend it to. But $5 is a bargain for the extra-level of quality you receive, and easily affordable.
Man, I can't wait.

It should look better than DVD's, no? That's what I'm expecting, as my HD monitor waits until the DirecTivo unit comes out and it can finally flex its 1080i muscles. I think I'll be a little disappointed if it only looks as good as DVDs.

You might want to check out the TiVo community forums. Looks like you may be waiting a little longer. The conspiracy theorists there believe DirecTV actually turned the delivery truck around last week because of a product issue. It makes for fun reading ;-)

These weren't A/V engineers saying it, they were making a rough comparison. I remember moving from fuzzy analog cable to digital DirecTV and thinking "Wow, this looks like a DVD all the time!" and I often tell friends that, though it's not actual DVD quality.

Any idea on a price point for the unit? I'm thinking about switching to DirectTV but I keep holding off for stuff like this.

Word on the street is that MSRP will be $999. Pricey when you consider that a "standard" DirecTiVo can be had for less than $75. Perhaps DTV will have discount incentives for new customers, but I have a feeling it won't be breaking the $500 mark for awhile.

Josh that's just suggested retail. I know some places are selling them for about $800 now, but that's just for the unit alone. DirecTV always does the incentive thing for new customers. I bet in a few months they'll be about $299 with a new subscription.
