Gateway Connected DVD for $87 at their fire sale
Tony posted a great tip in the old Gateway player thread. Gateway is closing all 188 stores on Friday of this week, and they're slashing prices on all their products in the store. I don't know if they'll have any cheap plasma screens, but they're selling the Gateway Connected DVD player (with free wireless g card!) for about $87.
If you've been thinking about getting this unit, remember the stores close Friday, so dump your zip into their locator and get to a store quick!
update: I just called a store and found out they're selling their plasma screens for 15% off, which would mean almost $500 off on a $3k model.

Off topic, but speaking of wireless, is there a way to get cable TV in a room that isn't wired for it?
For example, my home office isn't wired for cable TV, and I don't want to run wiring from one end of the house to the other.
In other words, is there a wireless or HomePlug-like technology available for TV signals?

A coworker and I just dashed to the local Gateway Store and bought the last 3 they had.
Can they be multiregion hacked?

Yep, here are instructions on how to region-free your Gateway DVD. I did it and ordered a few discs from amazon.co.uk and they played fine.

It's a good idea to call ahead -- each location is just selling out their current stock. The store here in Redmond, WA had a guy come in and buy up all 5 remaining connected DVD players in one shot.
They have good deals on laptops, digital cameras (a 5MP Fujitsu for $249) and the 42" plasmas for $2300. YMMV.

Anyone know if Gateway's Connected DVD Player can stream recorded programs from a MythTV box? I suppose it's possible, but the files probably need to be trans-coded into a compatible format.

The Gateway stores in San Jose and Berkeley, CA are out of stock.

Just called and they said it's $150, not $87 (lynnwood, Wa)

i ran out at lunch and picked one of these up, was the floor model (all they had left). $55 for the unit and another $50 for the wireless-g card. seems nice so far.

Thanks for the tip. I passed on the DVD players, there were several, but did pick up a Lyra 128MB MP3 player for $40. So thanks for the head's up!

The store in Portland, Maine is down to selling the fixtures.

I went and got the last one from the store in Carle Place, NY. It was $87 w/out the card.

The store in Burlington, MA was all out of DVD and Video equipment - down to selling fixtures as well. They were watching "Office Space" on a 60-inch TV, and sending camera-phone pictures of the empty store to former co-workers, saying "check it out, the place is gutted". The hand-made signs in the windows: "Jobs Needed, Inqire within". Kinda sad, kinda weird. I almost bought a digital camera I don't need out of sympathy.

Got the last DVD 220 at Berkeley, CA store.
Unfortunately, there was
a.) no remote, and
b.) they would not give me the wired card, and
c.) they would not take it back.
I am probably going to destroy the thing and send the broken parts to Ted Waite as I
a.) don't need yet another plain DVD Player w/o remote,
b.) am really pissed that I'm out $94 bucks.

..went to CP, NY store. Reps were extremely kind and helpful. A few things left. 15% off of everything.
Kodak printer dock 6000 -96 bucks
Gateway dct50 digital 249 bucks
mp3 player 210-79 bucks
Actually, there were many things left in the store. Good luck gateway employees!

so i guess i'm the only idjut who got reamed on this deal?
no network card, no remote.
can i use it w/o the remote?
Posted by: carl | April 08, 2004 at 02:39 AM
I went and picked one up yesterday. Looking at the longer number on the box I don't think the $87 come with a card. YOu can add a PCMCIA card right on the back tho and I found the suggested ethernet card for sale online for $20.

They have the cards there at Gateway.
Most folks here are saying they got cards free.
But the unit is usless w/o a remote, which is what mine was missing.

If you dont have a remote, I would call gateway tech support and say yours didnt come with a remote.
Otherwise, buy a programmable remote at walmart and clone someone else's remote.
If you need someone to assist, e-mail me.

Would someone be willing to let me send them a learning remote and have it returned to me with the codes for a Gateway Connected DVD?
Any assistance would be greatly appricated.

If you are familiar with JP1, there is a file for the Gateway Connected DVD in the Yahoo JP1 Group file area. There's a discussion about it here:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1128&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
I was able to upgrade my $20 JP1 remote with no problem. I think there are a couple of missing functions, but I haven't missed them -- they are either little used, or there are multi-key work arounds.

I also bought one plasma screens, with 20% off. Very nice deal.

I bought one of these in March and had immediate problems with songs playing 2-8 seconds then fast forwarding to the next over wireless 802.11G network. It will do this right through a song list. After talking to Gateway support they told me to get a replacement from the (now closed) Gateway store. Did that but the new one did the exact same thing. After fooling around with it for three months, Gateway tech support finally admitted that they have lots of problems with this and there is no fix. Since it is past the 15 days, they won't give me a refund.
Avoid this lemon, if you are still thinking about buying one.
