Cheaper TiVos

Reconditioned TiVos are $99 now, and they've also got a $129 special on a new 40hr model that they shared in the last promotional email I got from them.

At this rate, they'll eventually be free, following a cell-phone model where the monthly fee makes them cash over the years.

I posted the discount email in the TiVoLovers community on Live Journal too, so anyone can get at it there. Basically there is a 10% discount on all three TiVo units up front, then there is still a $50 rebate.

So a 140 hour unit that sells for $399 is $309 ($40 savings, $50 rebate).

Ok, a dumb question, but if I'm not going to hack the unit, would I be ok with just a replay tv? I'm thinking about using something that doesn't require the monthly service. Or..is there a hack that let's me use the Tivo with a free directory service?
