A trip down memory lane...

Andy sent me over a couple choice bits from the usenet archvie. Here's a discussion of digital video recorders before the launch of ReplayTV:

I love the idea of a tapeless VCR. Would the cost of Replay TV be lower if they produced a VCR-only type unit that did not have the complexity of "taping" while watching (already "taped") delayed TV?

And here's the first mention of ReplayTV or TiVo in usenet (ReplayTV was first):

ReplayTV will do for TV what the browser did for the Internet. It's the browser for TV.

Very interesting. Can't wait to get the Xbox in action soon enough.

That's not the first mention of ReplayTV in Usenet... The first are these two job postings by ReplayTV, for a sales manager and QA Tester. Here's the first non-commercial post.

You can browse through the rest of 1998's references, ordered by date descending.

Ah - but remember, TiVo was Teleworld when they started. The first mention of 'TiVo' I can find (that isn't short for Tivoli or something) is Nov 10, 1998 - in the aforementioned RTV article.

This post is the first I found from that domain - Rod McInnis posting on 11/05/1997. And he is TiVo - you can watch his posting history and his address switches from @teleworld.com to @tivo.com down the road.

This post from July 8. 1998 is the first business related post I found - a job opening. One of three posted that day.

I just found this mention of 'Teleworld and Replay Networks' upcoming products.
