ReplayTV hack DVArchive updated to 3.0
I have a friend that got a ReplayTV back in 2000 when I got my first TiVo and he's always insisted he got the better machine. Older Replay units (specifically the 4xxx and 5xxx series) are almost infinitely hackable, and a software package like DVArchive has a mindblowing list of features:
# See what shows your ReplayTV(s) have recorded right from your computer
# Automatically finds your ReplayTVs
# Download shows from your ReplayTV to your computer to watch, archive, burn to DVD/VCD, etc
# Automatic support for Replay 4xxx and 5xxx Series units
# Turn your computer into a virtually unlimited capacity ReplayTV show archive
# Schedule automatic downloads of shows from your ReplayTV to your computer
# Schedule automatic purging/deleting of shows you don't like but which your ReplayTV keeps recording
# Watch previously downloaded shows OR watch shows directly from your ReplayTV without having to download them first
# Control your ReplayTV remotely (turn it on, off, delete shows, etc)
# Manage your ReplayTVs photos
# Control your ReplayTV from your computer
# View and Search TV Listings
# Schedule new recordings on your ReplayTV (ReplayTV 5xxx series only)
# View lists up the upcoming recordings (and conflicts) for your ReplayTVs
# Access these listings, schedule recordings, schedule downloads, etc via a web browser from anywhere in the world
# Has a clean interface that allows you to see and use all your ReplayTVs from one place
The only TiVos I know that are capable of this entire featureset are what I would dub "ultrahacked" and are owned by electrical engineers and veteran software developers. But with ReplayTV and DVArchive, this kind of uber-functionality is as easy as installing a simple to use Windows program.
They've just released the 3.0 version, if you've got a ReplayTV and a home network run, don't walk, to get this package.

Indeed, DVArchive is the killer app for RTV owners. I've used DVArchive 2.1 daily, looking forward to the web server, & up to the minute remote scheduling of DVA 3.0
For users with phat pipes, DVA 3.0 adds internet streaming to it's back of tricks. Imagine co-workers looks as you watch 'The Screen Savers' on your work desktop from your DVA box back home. (I hear then beyondtv will also do this.)

Funny you mention "The Screen Savers": last night's epsiode had some good stuff on using DVArchive to stream video (other than extracted ReplayTV files) from your computer to a ReplayTV. It's still a pain, requiring at least TMPG with some plug-ins and DVArchive, but it's do-able.

No accident, I had just come from the poopli.com site after requesting the screen savers episode from another RTV user. A I do not get TechTV.

Whoo! *runs*
Well, I'll run when I get home. And maybe this version will work on my desktop, which for some reason keeps failing during transfer.

Hi,
I have been looking for an application or a hardware device that would allow me to save and stream video from my TV. I also was hoping that it would have the functionallity to allow me to stream mp3s to my home theatre system. After pooking around the net for a while I finally came across this article. It seems that using ReplayTV along with DAarchive on my home network is a pretty good solution. Do you guys think that any of the software PVR solutions can compete with the ReplayTV?

BeyondTV (formnerly Snapstream, Windoze)&
MythTV (Linux)
Both comete nicely feature for feature with RTV. And bring ither things to the table like mp3 streaming & internet radio.

It's actually a Java program, so it runs on Mac OS X and Linux and anywhere else with a 1.4 level JDK.

The DVArchive site has never been down more than a day -- not sure what qualifies as forever, but head over to www.dvarchive.org.
If it is offline (periodically system maintenance), it's usually back online within 10 minutes. Otherwise, it has about 99.92% up time.

DVArchive rocks! It's an awesome full featured product. It runs very well on my Windows XP sp2 box with JRE 1.4.2.

I am new to this hacking thing and have a RTV5504. I am wondering if these software versions will work for my unit? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx Joe

Is there a program that would allow me to use a cross-over cable to communicate with a Replay TV? I would like to download shows from my Replay TV to my computer, using DVarchive, but I can't utilize the internet option on my Replay TV because I don't have an internet connection at home (the Replay TV looks for a connection before it allows me to switch to the internet option).

Are there any hacks that remove any calling home feature that the ReplayTV box has? I've got the box (5040), but, not the service anymore (cancelled since I got a HD DVR from TimeWarner) and would like to utilize the box in some way.
Wouldn't mind loading a new OS on it and us it as a media center or something.
Any thoughts?
Thanks..

Is there a way to download DVArchive shows to my pc via the web server. It seems that the web server only allows streaming and administrative tasks. I want to download to my pc via the web server and watch it later.
thanks!

DVArchive IS brilliant. Is there any way to increase teh network speed of RelayTV? 380Kbps is hideously slow when the network can do 100Mbps!
