HD DirecTiVo in stores now?

hdtivodvr.jpg Orbit Satellite seems to be selling the Hughes HD-DVR250T, showing a price of $999 and a status of "waiting list". It's probably still a few weeks from shipping but it does appear that they're taking pre-orders on it. Hopefully the price will come down in the coming months for both existing and new customers as well.

Several other vendors are taking preorders, including the Good Guys (via phone), Ultimate Electronics, Tweeter, and others (see the TiVo Community forum). The best deal was from Value Electronics, though.

Check out the AVS forum too. There's a guy in there quoting a ship date in April. They have a dealer taking pre-orders and promising a significant discount (up to $200) based on the size of your deposit.

I personally can't wait to see how this thing does. My guess is that the first incarnation could have a bug or two and they may be subject to a lot of early software updates. I've been holding off on buying an HD set until this was available, and now I'm going to wait just a little longer until the price comes down a smidge.

Hmm, I wonder if there will be any upgrade specials for the current Tivo folks out there. (I already have a HDTV-Ready projection set)

Well, there is one thing, that may cause me to upgrade to HD yet.

Basically, for the first time, I recorded a show from a DirectTivo (Samsung) to a VHS. I saw a noticeable difference in video quality between video tape and Tivo. The Tivo was simply so much cleaner than the VHS. Wow... I was that surprised on the difference.

I think, in my next Tivo box, that I will need the ability of it to transfers programs to a DVD disk.
