A post on Gizmodo has renewed my DivX interest. KiSS Technology has upped their DivX playing box and introduced the KiSS DP-558. Not only can it play DVDs, but also DivX 3.11/4/5, XviD, CDs, MP3s, Oggs, and a lot more. Ethernet ports on the back allow you to stream, and it also has a 80GB hard disk to record television programs onto.

This is huge!!! (KiSS DP-558)
But i was wondering how much "gold in Euros" would one need to buy it?
And would a Greek like me be able to find one of those somewhere around here? Or from a retailer willing to ship?
thanks
Keep up the good work!

Your friend can't have the DP-558 since it wil be released in Feb/March 2004! Network exists on DP-500 and DP-508.
Most be one of them.
For the prices:
DP-500 around 200 Euro
DP-508 areoun 400 Euro
DP-558 around 700 Euro (DVD Burner included)
These are just wild prices for the month Jan/Feb 2004.
DP-558 gues for Feb/March to hit the marker.

Hi guys, I'm from Germany. One can buy the DP-558 here since a week. The delivery time is 10 days. The player costs 570 EUR at the cheapest vendor here. A very reasonable price already.
I'll wait for the DP-588 (with DVD-burner) to come out and take the DP-558 then for hopefully even some bucks less.
The DP-588 is anounced to be here Jan/Feb 2004.
By the way: The DP-508 costs you 400 EUR and the DP-500 ist available for 230 EUR.

Does anyone know when they will be available in stores in the US? No stores near me carry them.

Amazon used to have a couple models for sale but they were always out of stock. Otherwise, I've only seem them for sale in the US on eBay.

Hi everyone,
The 558 comes without dvd-burner and will be available round januari for about 580 euro's (www.nomatica.com).
I heard that there will be a 588 version with dvd burner, but on the kiss site they don't mention it.

There is a group of people who are tweaking their kiss products.
There is a manual how to upgrade a 500 to a 508 (with harddisk).
So I guess there will be a tweak to replace the dvd with a dvd burner (558 to 588). The only problem is the software, but when the software for the 588 is available then this is no problem.
So I suggest, buy a 558 and tweak it later!

All well and good, and I'd buy one today if I wasn't such a cheapskate, but for one thing. Can I copy recorded programs from the box to my PC?

Does any one have the 558 already, if so how does the tv tuner work. What I mean is can u just record anything like a normal video and does it work with cable and Satellite?

I have also been waiting for the new models before getting one of these.
I saw them at CES in Las Vegas and was very impressed with the way that they presented themselves and their kit on what was a big stand for a small company. It looked lke a big outlay by them - no doubt trying to make a serious entry into USA market.
The recent KISS v MPlayer GPL mini-war ( search the news around January here - http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design6/news.html ) may well put off early adopters who are fans of open source.

It appears that the DP-558 will not hit the market before March, probably the end of March given the evasive answer of the KISS representative :(

Does anybody know anything more about the performance, availability and price of the Kiss DP-558?
Posted by: Dimtris Raptakis at Mar 13, 2004 5:44:00 PM
The 508 is available in the UK through http://www.scan.co.uk,
Even though the system has an 80GB HDD, it doesn't record TV programs (there is a Q&A section at the bottom of the page) which will stop me buying one, and I don't really want to build a computer orientated pvr/divx streamer :(
