Today Echostar reported surpassing one million Dish Network DVRs. This is a huge industry milestone that TiVo was projected to reach by the end of this year. Analysts have long said after this "tipping point" is reached, subscriptions may skyrocket as the technology hits critical mass. Echostar took a different aim at the market, by giving their boxes away to gain new satellite customers and increase satisfaction among their current users.
I think this does a great job of demonstrating that TiVo's business model of moderately priced boxes and monthly fees is likely their achilles heel; other upstarts are gaining marketshare by the day through either including free service for life on single cost boxes, or giving hardware away freely in exchange for content subscriptions.

Does that include the numerous DishPlayers I had to have replaced?
DishPlayer: WebTV based PVR (since 'upgraded' to MSNTV based PVR.)
I keep asking them if they would like to send a 721 or other PVR instead of replacing them every few months. They get $1.99/mo + $14.95 each one they replace. Not sure how it is profitable to keep replacing them.

I really like the DISH Player-DVR 510 that I recieved afer reading a short piece in an article here. I am surprised that people are not lining up in droves for it! A FREE 100hr. PVR for a one year contract is the way it should be! (I think that I do pay $4.99 a Mo. for the DVR service/schedule) I wanted to build my own PVR, but why bother? I wanted Tivo, but why pay? It is not as smart as a Tivo box, but the price is right! After my year contract is up, maybe DTV offers somthing better! I get simmilar service to DTV and 3 mos. free showtime\cinemax

I need tech help. Does anyone know the pin out on the data port of my EchoStar 501? I need to know which pins are data out, data in and ground. Also, what is the plug designation that is needed to plug into the port? I'm trying to get it to communicate with my Datron 3000 antenna on my motorhome. Thanks, Ron
