Guide to Series 1 video extraction

Michael over at Cruftbox has a great little peek at what his hacked Series 1 box looks like running TyStudio to extract movie files and convert to mpeg for storage or DVD backup. Although this is currently impossible to do on series 2 boxes, it's nice to know that hacking scripts have grown into user-friendly packages on the older devices.

Glad I came across this. I have both a series 1 and 2 Tivo. The series 2 is my main box and is connected via the hma, also nice. But I am now acquiring a nice Sony camcorder and DVD burner to support it and was wondering if it was gonna be possible to access the Tivo series 2 via my home network and copy to personal DVD. I guess for now the answer is yes and no. Via a series 1, yes; series 2, no. If done via series 1, I need to buy a turbonet card and place telnet/ftp into linux. As for series 2; wait and pray!

UGH!! All that Tivo lacks is the ability to backup or copy the recorded material to DVD. So how does this differ from a VCR backing up to tape?? If i can legitimally copy "over-the-air" material to Tivo, why can't I back it up to DVD and save my precious recording time on Tivo? In fact Sony, Panasonic and others are beginning to market just such a recorder; complete with hard-drive and all. And why can ReplayTV do this and Tivo can't??

Here's to the wait; let it be a short one!

Can someone please send me simple step by step on how to extract. I have a Tivo DVR 2.

Please and thanx

I'm looking through the archives here, and I have to say the information that has been given here (since day 1) has been fantastic! It's also interesting to see all the changes over the last 3 years.
