The current price promotion ends July 31; I remember an article a few weeks ago hinting at newer cheaper (possibly feature-reduced) Tivos coming out pre-winter. Any recollection of that? I haven't relocated it.

We're contemplating a 2nd tivo (hey, the first one was free..) but haven't decided whether it's smarter to buy now or wait a month or two for a better deal or a better machine.

I don't know, I haven't heard about new versions coming out, but I wouldn't be surprised. I think the general public really wants the box to be as low cost as possible. I know dozens of family and friends that are intrigued by tivo but can't seem to make the several hundred dollar leap (plus the monthly no one seems to like either).

Even if it were functionally crippled, if Tivo could ship a box for $99, I bet their subscription base would shoot through the roof.

I've heard that Tivo will be offering a no monthly fee option soon. No seasons pass, and only three days of programming info, etc

Matt -- speaking of the $99 price point, there's a $99 deal at expertsatellite.com that gets you a two room DTV installation, with a dual tuner HDVR2 in one of the rooms (plain sat. receiver in the other). Triple LNB dish, the two receivers, installation, shipping, and two free months DTV all for $99. Of course it's for new DTV subscribers only, but still, great deal for those folks.

Yeah Ed, the satellite companies know how it works: you essentially give away the equipment for free to gain a steady long-time customer.

A Tivo without season passes? I hate to say it, but that sounds like it would really suck.
